Mama's Kona Coffee LLC "Ku-ka Ku-Ka" One day we were sitting in the Aloha Theatre Cafe having a wonderful lunch when I saw mama Lily gazing up at the posters of old movies on the wall. She started telling us that when she was a young girl her family came to the theater to watch motion pictures...... Michelle Remembering the old Tanimoto Theater When I was a child, the Tanimoto Theater (which is now the Aloha Theater) was owned by Mr. Tanimoto. Mr. Tanimoto and my dad were good friends and he would periodically give my family free passes mainly on Saturday nights. Motion pictures held on: On Saturday nights, the theater would have a full house. This was the only entertainment in Kona at the time. Otherwise, you went to the beach.
I remember my mom would go shopping at Oshima's store. At the time Oshima had 2 stores. The first store is where it stands today. The other store was on the north side of the Tanimoto (Aloha) Theatre. Today, a Real Estate office is there on the same lot. During my younger days in the 1930's, the town of Kainaliu only had 3 stores, a vegetable stand, tailor, gas station, barber shop and the Standard Bakery owned by the Fujino family and is still in business today so many years later. Back then there were very few cars so everyone walked to the movies, the store, the vegetable stand and the bakery. One of my favorite memories of being with my dad was going to see Tarzan and Flash Gordon. Whenever Mr. Tamimoto showed those movies, my dad would go.
